“Our space has never been so fully utilized and I get compliments constantly from our families, staff and even community members.” Lincoln Elementary School Principal.

The first day of the 2022-2023 school year students at Lincoln and McKinley Elementary schools returned from summer to find newly refurbished play yards with bright, colorful striping, 4-square courts, a new basketball court, exciting new play equipment…and even some lion paw prints on the pavement!

In 2021, the Burlingame School District reached out to CALA to help to reimagine these critical outdoor spaces that were in desperate need of a refresh. To fully assess what the school community wanted to see in the play yards, a survey was conducted of students, staff and parents in which a detailed picture emerged of the schools’ priorities. The biggest challenge, how to fit it all in such a tight space! AND, design it and build it before school starts in the fall!

To meet the District’s desire for the unveiling to be on the first day of school, CALA went to work! Within 3 months, CALA efficiently laid out all the desired program elements for the District’s review and quickly turned to preparing construction documents. A contractor was then selected and the improvements were constructed in the District’s tight summer window! The finishing touches were literally being applied the day before school was back in session.

We enjoyed collaborating with the District and look forward to helping build community within the school district on future projects!
